How to lower your chances of getting a gout attack?

If you are experiencing sudden, intense pain accompanied by warmth, swelling, redness and tenderness in your joint, you could be suffering from an acute gout attack!


What exactly is Gout? 


Gout is a type of arthritis where large amounts of uric acid build up in the blood, forming crystals that accumulate in and around a joint. This causes severe pain and swelling. Generally, uric acid is derived from the degradation of purine, a substance present in certain foods. The accumulation of uric acid could be due to the overconsumption of dietary purine or ineffective excretion of uric acid. Without treatment, episodes of acute gout may develop into chronic gout with destruction of joint surfaces, joint deformity, and painless tophi.


Here are some tips to help you reduce the incidence of a gout attack!


  • Consume more fruits, vegetables, whole grains and low-fat dairy products. Eat less meat. 


  • Avoid high-purine foods such as organ meats, prawns, sardines, mussels, mackerel and anchovies. *An exception: High-purine vegetables do not elevate your risk of gout/gout attacks. 


  • Drink more water. Sufficient consumption of water helps your body to flush out uric acid.


  • Avoid or restrict alcohol to a maximum of 1 standard drink a day (equivalent to 100 ml of wine). Drinking too much alcohol can cause gout attacks as it hinders your body from removing uric acid.
