Trans-Fats May Cause Memory Loss

Not only do trans-fats increase your risk for heart disease, cancer and diabetes, they have been shown to worsen memory!

 

What exactly is trans-fat?

 

Trans-fats are produced via an industrial process where hydrogen is added to vegetable oil to solidify the oil at room temperature. They are usually used to improve the flavour, texture and shelf life of processed foods. Generally, trans-fats are found in a range of food products like creamer, margarine, baked goods, snacks and fried foods.

 

Trans-fats May Adversely Affect Your Memory

 

Researchers at the University of California found that higher trans-fat intake decreased the word recall performance in men under 45 years old. Subjects were shown a set of cards each bearing a word, and they had to decide if each word was new or repeated. Those with the highest trans-fat intake (15.7g/day) recalled 11 to 12 fewer words, which is approximately a 10% drop in memory.

 

So What Should You Do?

 

Eat as little trans-fats as possible. Look out for partially hydrogenated oil in the ingredient list – this implies that there are trans-fats present in the food. Do not be misled by nutrition facts labels that state “0g trans-fat”. Food manufacturers are allowed to indicate there are no trans-fats if the food is composed of less than 0.5 g of trans-fat per serving.
