6 Ways to Combat Dry Skin

Are you facing constant dry skin issues? Here are 6 measures you should take to keep your skin moist and healthy.

 

1. Consume more healthy fats

 

This includes polyunsaturated and monounsaturated fats found in avocados, fatty fish (e.g. salmon and herring), nuts and seeds. These fats moisturise your skin naturally, keeping it supple and flexible.

 

 

2. Eat more zinc-rich foods

 

Zinc is required in the normal functioning of your sebaceous glands, which produce sebum to coat and moisturise your skin. You can find high amount of this mineral in whole grains, cashews, hemp seeds and lean red meat.

 

 

3. Stay hydrated

 

Just a mild dehydration will show up in your skin first. As such, you are recommended to drink eight glasses of water daily. You can also incorporate cucumbers (low-calorie, water-rich vegetable) into your diet, by adding them into your sandwich or salad.

 

Observe the colour of your urine to check if you’re well-hydrated. Your urine should be clear or pale. If it’s dark in colour, you’re not drinking adequate amount of water.

 

 

4. Opt for cool and short showers

 

Did you know that hot and long showers strip your skin of its natural oils? Hence, you should limit to a 10-minute shower, using warm water instead of hot water.

 

 

5. Apply moisturiser especially after showering

 

Use natural moisturisers made with plant-based oils (e.g. olive oil or avocado oil). Moisturise after you have gently patted your skin dry. This helps maintain your skin moisture level.

 

 

6. Stay away from deodorant soaps, perfumed soaps, and alcohol products

 

These can eliminate the natural oils on your skin. You should use gentle skin cleansers or cleansing creams.
