4 Things You Need to Know About Natto and Nattokinase

We have all heard about the terms “Natto” and “Nattokinase”, but did you know they are NOT the same? In this article, we will discuss the differences between “Natto” and “Nattokinase”.

 

1. Appearance

 

Natto is the fermented soybean, a well-known traditional Japanese superfood. On the other hand, nattokinase is an enzyme extracted from natto, commonly recognised as the "slimy sticky strings" in a box of natto.

 

 

2. Ability to dissolve blood clots

 

Natto has limited ability to dissolve blood clots. Typically, the nattokinase activity in natto varies from 1,400 FU to 2,000 FU per 50g of commercially available natto. In contrast, the nattokinase activity in nattokinase supplement is more stable, and has strong fibrinolytic activity to dissolve and break down unwanted blood clots.
