Are you at risk for AMD ?

Age-Related Macular Degeneration (AMD) is a chronic irreversible medical condition that results in loss of central vision because of damage to the macula, or central part of the retina. It occurs with increasing age and most common for people over 60 years of age. One may see shadows in vision, have distorted vision, or decreasing visual acuity, as well as the inability to discern colours or make out colour contrast when diagnosed with AMD. Studies found that Lutein and Zeaxanthin either help prevent AMD or may slow progression of the disease by block blue light from reaching the underlying structures in the retina, thereby reducing the risk of light-induced oxidative damage that could lead to AMD.

Feed your eyes.

In various studies and clinical trials, antioxidant vitamins such as vitamins A, C and E can help maintain healthy cells and tissues in the eyes. These vitamins are found in fruits and vegetables such as oranges, tomatoes, kale and spinach. Two key protective antioxidants are lutein and zeaxanthin, which also help to protect against macular degeneration and protect eyes from free radical damage. Omega 3 fatty acids are essential for nerve conduction in the retina. For healthy eyes, eat a good and balanced diet with lots of fresh fruits and vegetables, with oily fish like salmon, sardine or mackerel.

Maintain brain health with good family relationship

Regular visits, outings and phones calls with your family and friends not only make your life more meaningful but also stimulates and protects your brain! Research has shown that elderly who have regular social interaction with friends and family has a significant effect on long-term brain health and less likely to suffer cognitive decline.

DHA for eye and brain health

Do you know that hyperactivity disorder in children, cognitive decline in elderly, poor memory and depression are associated with DHA omega 3 deficiencies? Docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) is a valuable nutrient found abundantly in the brain and retina to support brain development, maintain optimal brain function and preserve eye health. DHA is also an essential fatty acid that cannot be produced by the body, hence the need to get it from diet or supplement.

Sensitive teeth? Pick the right brush for pain-free brushing

For those with sensitive teeth and bleeding gum, brushing and cleaning interdental spaces can create pain and discomfort. Tooth sensitivity occurs as a result of receding gum and exposed dentin. Many factors lead to sensitivity. Brushing too hard, over time, can damage enamel and cause recession of gum. The build-up of plaque, may cause gum disease, leading to bleeding gum and sensitivity. Pick a soft brush with fine bristles to reduce abrasive on tooth structure and to cleanse the gum line better. A toothbrush with compact brush head allows you to brush hard-to-reach areas, like back teeth, which can be easily missed while brushing with normal-sized brush head.

Healthy diet for healthy hair.

Nuts supply zinc that promotes stronger hair and stimulate healthy hair growth. Don’t forget the greens, they are loaded with Vitamin A to relieve itching or dryness of scalp and Vitamin C which may retard hair loss. Whole grains supply the silicon which prevents brittle hairs. Vitamin Bs from meat and mushrooms help delay the onset of gray hair. Keep your diet low in unhealthy fats, as excess fats consumption leads to oily hair.  Beauty starts within, begins with a healthy natural diet for your nutrients need!

Hair styling without the damage.

Exposure to heat through blow-drying or perming can affect the quality of hair. It may result in split ends which are non-reversible. Please ensure that sufficient nourishment is supplied before and after the heat-styling. You can always consult your hair stylist for styling which causes lesser harm, and products with natural ingredients.

women's care tips

Bigger may not be better during pregnancy.

Weight gain during pregnancy varies among women. If you are underweight (BMI <18.5), you should gain 12.5-18kg. If your weight is normal (BMI 18.5-25), the recommended weight gain is 11.5-16kg. For overweight mother (BMI 25.1-29.9), weight gain should between 7-11.5kg. For those who are obese, weight gain is should be <7kg. Avoid sudden and excess weight gain as these are associated with adverse health effects: pregnancy induced hypertension, gestational diabetes, large baby who may become obese, and complications during delivery.

Poor immune health? Your gut could be the culprit!

When the intestinal lining is irritated, it creates pathways for unwanted larger molecules to pass through. Bacteria, toxins, undigested food particles, are the potential culprits that impair your immune health. Stress, infections, excessive alcohol consumption, a poor diet and medication can affect your gut. Vinegar is a traditional aid for digestion and reducing bloatedness, as it promotes the growth of good bacteria in the gut. For a new sense of wellness from within, try Kouzu Vinegar, a prized amino-rich Japanese vinegar. The 3-year fermented formula promotes vitality, aids digestion and natural weight loss!

Laugh to better health!

The easiest and simplest way to boost your immunity is to laugh out loud. Laughing helps to decrease stress hormones and increases immune cells and strengthens your internal defence system to resist colds better. Having a positive attitude, and a sense of humor helps you relax and feel more upbeat.

Essential Good Cholesterol.

Cholesterol is necessary for the production of hormones, bile salts and vitamins in our body. High levels of bad cholesterol (LDL) may cause plaque formation on artery walls, while good cholesterol (HDL) facilitates removal of excess cholesterol thus decreasing the risk of heart diseases. Maintain a good cholesterol balance with soluble fiber intake (to lower bad LDL), and Omega-3 fatty acids (to raise good HDL). Cold water fish (salmon, sardine and mackerel) are rich in Omega-3 fatty acids. Alternatively, try flax seeds and soy beans.

Soy Good!

Soy protein can lower cholesterol and reduce the risk of heart diseases. Soy reduces total cholesterol, LDL cholesterol and triglycerides. The FDA claims that diets low in saturated fat and cholesterol with 25g of soy protein per day can help to reduce the risk of heart diseases. One glass of soy milk contains 6-7 grams of soy protein. For good heart health, have more tofu, or take 3 – 4 glasses of unsweetened soy milk daily.

Choose whole grain breads.

Choose wholegrain breads over white breads. White bread is made from white flour is refined to remove the bran and germ, which carry the most nutrients and fiber. Look out for food labels that list the first ingredient as whole wheat, whole meal, or whole corn. If you can, choose whole grain breads with intact grains, seeds, oats or nuts. These will help regulate blood sugar level and maximize the benefits of carbohydrates.

Take 5 from the computer.

Computers have become necessities in our daily lives. It’s important to maintain good eye habits and good posture, as long term repeated usage can lead to repetitive strain injury. Ideally, the computer screen should be 18-30 inches away from you. Take short, frequent breaks of at least 30 seconds after every 20 minutes of computer use to rest your muscles and eyes. Bilberry is naturally rich in anthocyanins that alleviate fatigue and guard your eyes against the glaring damage.

Skin friendly fruits

Eating more Vitamin C-rich fruits, such as strawberry, guava, orange, and papaya may help to ward off wrinkles and age-related dryness. Vitamin C is an antioxidant that slows the rate of free-radical damage -- free radicals are unstable molecules that damage collagen and cause skin dryness, fine lines and wrinkles. Researches suggest that vitamin C may also reduce sunburn caused by exposure to ultraviolet radiation and prevent the consequences of long-term sun exposure, which can lead to skin cancer.
