Smoking Can Affect Your Vision Health

Smoking is a risk factor for certain eye diseases such as age-related macular degeneration, cataracts, glaucoma and diabetic retinopathy. This is because it reduces blood flow and nutrient supply to the eyes and increases the amount of toxic substances like tar and nicotine in the body.  Hence, protect your eyes by quitting smoking. Consider taking an eye care supplement that contains Lutein, Zeaxanthin and various antioxidants to reduce age-related vision degeneration.

Eye Exercise

A four-step eye exercise can relieve tired eyes after long hours of working in front of the computer screen. Do it daily, particularly in between breaks from the computer. Step 1: Close your eyes tightly for 3- 5 seconds and open them for 3-5 seconds. Repeat 7-8 times. Step 2: Close your eyes again and massage in circular movements for 1-2 minutes. Step 3: Press three fingers against upper eyelids, hold for 1-2 seconds then release. Repeat 5 times. Step 4: Roll your eyes clockwise, then counter-clockwise, and then blink once. Repeat 5 times.

Natural brain food

Avocados are fruit from Persea americana, a tall evergreen tree that can grow up to 65 feet in height. Avocados are rich in nutrients such as Vitamin E, C, K, Bs, fiber and potassium. Researchers suggests that foods rich in vitamin E—including avocado, whole grain, seed, nuts as well as dark green leafy vegetables are associated with a lower risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease, the most common form of dementia that cause the death of brain cells which lead to memory loss and cognitive decline.

Brisk Walking Boosts Brain Health

Do you know brisk walking stimulates blood circulation and provides sufficient oxygen supply to the brain which leads to improved brain functions and memory performance? Researchers found that brisk walking for 30 to 40 minutes a day, three times a week can maintain healthy structures and functions of the brain, and protect the brain against cognitive decline in later part of life.

Keep Your Toothbrush Clean

Keeping your toothbrush clean is vital for your oral health. Always rinse your toothbrush with water after using it. Store your toothbrush in an upright position and allow it to air-dry until the next use. Do not routinely cover toothbrushes or store them in closed containers, as it  encourages the growth of bacteria. It is also important to replace your toothbrush approximately every three to four months, or sooner if the bristles are frayed.  You may also opt for toothbrushes with anti-bacterial bristles to prevent bacteria growth on the brushhead.

Why Should You Use Dental Floss?

To have good oral health, it is not enough to brush your teeth twice a day, you need to floss at least once a day too. By flossing daily, plaque is removed from the areas between your teeth where your toothbrush cannot reach. This is important because plaque that is not removed by brushing and flossing can eventually harden into tartar. In addition, people who are wearing braces or have big interdental gaps can use a special interdental toothbrush for a more effective cleansing effect.

Does Regular Trimming Promote Hair Growth?

Having a haircut has no effect on the rate of hair growth. Whether you get a hair trim or not, hair grows at the rate of one inch per month. The only proven factors that affect the rate of hair growth are genetics, hormones, and diet. However, it is important to note that the chopping of the split ends (which impede healthy hair growth) may promote better hair growth. Still the best way to promote healthy hair growth is to reduce the likelihood of split ends by avoiding over-styling.

Healthy Diet For Healthy Hair

Nuts supply zinc which promotes stronger hair and stimulates healthy hair growth. Do not forget the greens, as they are loaded with Vitamin A to relieve itching and scalp dryness and Vitamin C which may retard hair loss. Also, whole grains are rich in silicon which prevents brittle hairs. Vitamin Bs from meat and mushrooms can help delay the onset of gray hair. Lastly, keep your diet low in unhealthy fats, as excess fats consumption leads to oily hair.  Beauty starts within, so begins with a healthy natural diet for healthy hair!

Monthly Breast Self Exam Can Save Lives!

The earlier Breast Cancer is diagnosed, the better the prognosis. All females should start conducting breast self-exam from the age of 20. To do a breast self-exam, lie on your back and put your right hand behind your head. Use three fingers from left hand to feel for lumps at right breast. Move your fingers around your breast in a circular movement from the outer edge to nipple area. Repeat the same steps for left breast. Do this self-exam at the same time every month either a few days after the start of your period or on first day of starting on a new pack of oral contraceptive pills.

Bigger May Not Be Better During Pregnancy

Weight gain during pregnancy varies among women. If you are underweight (BMI <18.5), you should gain 12.5-18kg. If your weight is normal (BMI 18.5-25), the recommended weight gain is 11.5-16kg. For overweight mother-to-be (BMI 25.1-29.9), the weight gain should between 7-11.5kg. For those who are obese, the weight gain should be less than 7kg. Avoid sudden and excessive weight gain as these are associated with adverse health effects such as pregnancy induced hypertension, gestational diabetes and complications during delivery.

Stay Healthy For An Enjoyable Trip

Nothing spoils the excitement of discovering a foreign place like falling sick. The most common conditions that take place during trips are diarrhea, nausea, abdominal cramps and bloating. It pays to take extra precautions, particularly if you are travelling to developing countries: always stick to bottled water, and avoid eating raw or undercooked food. Also, wash your hands with soap, and use a hand sanitizer when washing facilities are unavailable.

Boost Immune Health With Agaricus Mushroom

The Agaricus Blazei Murill (more commonly known as Brazilian mushrooms) contains the highest level of Beta-Glucans. Beta-Glucans stimulate various aspects of the immune system by the increasing activity levels of immune cells such as macrophages and T-cells that are first to fight bad bacteria and viruses. Lifestream ABM Immuno Advance contains an extracts that has 10 times the usual concentration of the Agaricus Blazei Murill, with other medicinal mushroom extracts for potent immunity protection.

Simple Foods For A Healthy Liver

A poorly functioning liver leads to fatigue, weakness, abdominal pain and loss of appetite. The easiest way to protect your liver is to eat right! Cruciferous vegetables such as broccoli, cauliflower and cabbage contain Glucosinolates which help the liver to produce enzymes for detoxification. Green leafy vegetables and fruits contain antioxidants that protect the liver from free radical damage. Garlic contains Allicin, which helps rinse out heavy metals such as mercury and lead from the liver. Add these foods into your daily diet to keep your liver healthy!

Easing Gastric Pain?

The term “gastric pain” is commonly used to describe pain or discomfort at the upper abdomen. Other symptoms typically include heartburn, bloating and nausea. Changing your lifestyle may help to ease your gastric pain. Eat small and frequent meals; avoid “irritating” food such as coffee, acidic, spicy or greasy food; avoid or limit alcohol intake and quit smoking.

Watch the caffeine

A moderate caffeine intake boosts metabolism and elevates moods. Long term effects of caffeine however, can cause heart palpitations, hypertension and insomnia. It is best to keep your daily caffeine intake to less than 400mg. One serving of espresso (1 oz.) has 40mg of caffeine. A cup of brewed coffee (8 oz.) contains up to 133mg of caffeine. Decaf coffee has less than 5mg of caffeine. Energy drinks and soft drinks are high in caffeine too - Red Bull (12 oz) has about 80mg of caffeine while a diet Pepsi has 36mg!

Take 5 from the computer

Computers have become necessities in our daily lives. It’s important to maintain good eye habits and good posture, as long term repeated usage can lead to repetitive strain injury. Ideally, the computer screen should be 18-30 inches away from you. Take short, frequent breaks of at least 30 seconds after every 20 minutes of computer use to rest your muscles and eyes. Bilberry is naturally rich in anthocyanins that alleviate fatigue and guard your eyes against the glaring damage.

Water for Beauty.

70% of our body is made up of water. Water is necessary for metabolic activities and regulating the moisture content in skin. With aging, the skin’s water binding ability is significantly reduced. For hydration from within, try Hyaluronic Acid, a skin nutrient that locks up to 6,000 times its weight to retain moisture, smoothen wrinkles, and stimulate repair of damaged skin.

Skin friendly fruits

Eating more Vitamin C-rich fruits, such as strawberry, guava, orange, and papaya may help to ward off wrinkles and age-related dryness. Vitamin C is an antioxidant that slows the rate of free-radical damage -- free radicals are unstable molecules that damage collagen and cause skin dryness, fine lines and wrinkles. Researches suggest that vitamin C may also reduce sunburn caused by exposure to ultraviolet radiation and prevent the consequences of long-term sun exposure, which can lead to skin cancer.

Fucoxanthin – The natural fat burner

Brown seaweed such as Wakame that is widely used in miso soup is rich in Fucoxanthin. Fucoxanthin is a botanical pigment that gives brown seaweed its brown-greenish colour. Researchers found that Fucoxanthin supports weight loss by enhancing body metabolism, increasing fat burning rate and reducing fat storage in the body.
