Are You At Risk For AMD ?

Age-Related Macular Degeneration (AMD) is a chronic irreversible medical condition that results in the loss of central vision because of damage to the macular, also known as the central part of the retina. It occurs with increasing age and is most commonly seen in people who are over 60 years of age. One may see shadows in vision, have distorted vision, experience decreasing visual acuity, as well as the inability to discern colours or make out colour contrast when diagnosed with AMD. Studies found that Lutein and Zeaxanthin help prevent AMD and slow progression of the disease by preventing blue light from reaching the underlying structures of the retina, thereby reducing the risk of light-induced oxidative damage that could lead to AMD.

Smoking Can Affect Your Vision Health

Smoking is a risk factor for certain eye diseases such as age-related macular degeneration, cataracts, glaucoma and diabetic retinopathy. This is because it reduces blood flow and nutrient supply to the eyes and increases the amount of toxic substances like tar and nicotine in the body.  Hence, protect your eyes by quitting smoking. Consider taking an eye care supplement that contains Lutein, Zeaxanthin and various antioxidants to reduce age-related vision degeneration.

Brisk Walking Boosts Brain Health

Do you know brisk walking stimulates blood circulation and provides sufficient oxygen supply to the brain which leads to improved brain functions and memory performance? Researchers found that brisk walking for 30 to 40 minutes a day, three times a week can maintain healthy structures and functions of the brain, and protect the brain against cognitive decline in later part of life.

DHA For Brain Development

During the last trimester of pregnancy and first two years of life, the brain undergoes rapid growth. At this stage, the brain requires sufficient nutrients especially DHA for the development of sensory, perceptual, cognitive, and motor skills. Fetuses and infants receive DHA from their mothers through the placenta and breast milk. Mothers should ensure sufficient DHA level through DHA-rich fishes that are free from heavy metals and pollutants, and high DHA supplements. Infant fed with formula milk should ingest milk that has DHA oil added to it to aid brain development.

Why Should You Use Dental Floss?

To have good oral health, it is not enough to brush your teeth twice a day, you need to floss at least once a day too. By flossing daily, plaque is removed from the areas between your teeth where your toothbrush cannot reach. This is important because plaque that is not removed by brushing and flossing can eventually harden into tartar. In addition, people who are wearing braces or have big interdental gaps can use a special interdental toothbrush for a more effective cleansing effect.

Sensitive Teeth? Pick The Right Brush For Pain-Free Brushing

For those with sensitive teeth and bleeding gum, brushing and cleaning interdental spaces can create pain and discomfort. Tooth sensitivity occurs as a result of receding gum and exposed dentin. Also, brushing too hard can damage enamel and cause the recession of gum. The build-up of plaque may cause gum disease which leads to gum bleeding and sensitivity. Pick a soft brush with fine bristles to reduce abrasion on tooth structure and to better cleanse the gum line. A toothbrush with a compact brush head allows you to brush hard-to-reach areas, like back teeth, which can be easily missed when brushing with a normal-sized brush head.

Shampoo Your Hair The Right Way!

Daily hair wash is essential for the hot and humid weather in Singapore. Here are some steps to shampoo your hair the right way: Gently brush your hair to improve blood circulation in your scalp and avoid entangled hair. Next, rinse hair with warm water to remove the dirt in your hair, but do not apply the shampoo directly onto scalp. Instead, lather the shampoo into foam by using your palms before applying the foamy mixture onto your scalp. Massage your scalp gently with your fingers, not nails then spend a longer time rinsing to ensure that no shampoo residue remains. Lastly, use a towel to remove excess water in your hair and let your hair dry with cool air.

Moisturize Dry Scalp

We put in a lot of efforts to make sure that our skin is well-moisturized but tend to forget the layer of skin underneath the hair. A person with dry skin will most likely have a dry scalp too. Having dry skin is the most common cause of an itchy and flaking scalp. Scalp oil moisturizes the scalp better than creams or lotions as it stays longer on the scalp. Jojoba oil is the most commonly used scalp oil, and other options include almond, flax seed or olive oil. Apply the scalp oil onto wet hair,as it prevents oil from getting into hair. Also, choose a shampoo with citrus oil, tea tree oil or chamomile oil as it rinses out oil treatment effectively.

Solution To Leukorrhea

Leukorrhea is a thick, whitish or yellowish vaginal discharge which is caused by inflammation and infection around the vaginal areas as well as the usage of vaginal deodorants. Power up your own immune defence system through the intake of probiotics which may help to inhibit the growth of yeast and other microbes that can possibly lead to abnormal discharge. Pick underwear made of cotton and avoid nylon as nylon retains sweat and increases the risk of infection. Good hygiene and a well-balanced diet are essential to reduce the risk of infections.

Away With PMS!

Premenstrual Syndrome (PMS) includes irritability, mood swings, water retention, bloating, and headaches.  Interestingly, PMS can account for more than 50% of the sick leave women take at work. Research by the National Institute of Health shows that women under stress have moderate to severe symptoms during menstruation. Solutions? Pick a sport - running, tennis, aerobic dancing, or any other kind of intensive exercise! This boosts serotonin levels, also known as the ‘happy’ hormone, which helps to reduce or even prevent PMS. Plus, exercise is a good stress buster too!

The Truth Behind Hand Foot Mouth Disease (HFMD)

Hand-Foot-Mouth-Disease HFMD is caused by a viral infection. Children aged 2 weeks to 5 years are the most susceptible to the disease which can be transmitted via direct contact through saliva, nasal discharge and faeces. Boosting your child’s immunity can help to reduce the chances of contracting HFMD. Therefore, parents should ensure their child eats a balanced diet with more vegetables and fruit for the vitamins, minerals and antioxidant-rich content. For picky eaters, try King Chlorella -pure chlorella tablets with fully cracked cell wall that releases chlorella nutrients optimally. Essential Good Cholesterol.

Cholesterol is necessary for the production of hormones, bile salts and vitamins in our body. High levels of bad cholesterol (LDL) may cause plaque formation on artery walls, while good cholesterol (HDL) facilitates removal of excess cholesterol thus decreasing the risk of heart diseases. Maintain a good cholesterol balance with soluble fiber intake (to lower bad LDL), and Omega-3 fatty acids (to raise good HDL). Cold water fish (salmon, sardine and mackerel) are rich in Omega-3 fatty acids. Alternatively, try flax seeds and soy beans.

Be Calm To Your Liver

In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), most of the body organs are connected to an emotion, and the liver is affiliated with anger. Anger may affect liver health and causing the liver’s energy flow to be blocked. Hence, it is important to be calm and slow to anger to keep your liver healthy.

Quality sleep for good health

Aim to get a good night’s rest of 6-8 hours of sleep for good health. A lack of sleep can cause muscle aches, dizziness, weight gain, attention deficit and lack of concentration. It can even increase the risk of developing cancer! The Nurses’ Health Study by Harvard University concludes that people who do not get sufficient amounts of sleep are at a much higher risk of developing breast cancer and colon cancer. Sleep helps to promote healthy secretion of Human Growth Hormone and melatonin that prevent aging and testosterone production.

Water for Beauty.

70% of our body is made up of water. Water is necessary for metabolic activities and regulating the moisture content in skin. With aging, the skin’s water binding ability is significantly reduced. For hydration from within, try Hyaluronic Acid, a skin nutrient that locks up to 6,000 times its weight to retain moisture, smoothen wrinkles, and stimulate repair of damaged skin.

Eat more avocado for supple skin

The main avocado‘s skin benefit comes from its high omega-9 fatty acid and vitamin E contents. Omega-9 fatty acid helps to maintain moisture in the outer layer of skin, make it soft and moisturized. It also involved in regenerating of damaged skin cells and reducing facial redness and irritation. While, vitamin E has strong anti-aging properties, beneficial to guard against photo-aging from sun –exposure.

What is in the bubble tea?

A cup of bubble tea to quench your thirst and you are loading your body with calories, fats and sugars! Bubble tea contains flavourants, sugars, with minimal nutritional value. The chewy black pearls are made from tapioca and sugar. With one added serving of the pearls, the calories of your bubble tea boosts up another 100kcal. Prefer the milky taste?
