Are You At Risk For AMD ?

Age-Related Macular Degeneration (AMD) is a chronic irreversible medical condition that results in the loss of central vision because of damage to the macular, also known as the central part of the retina. It occurs with increasing age and is most commonly seen in people who are over 60 years of age. One may see shadows in vision, have distorted vision, experience decreasing visual acuity, as well as the inability to discern colours or make out colour contrast when diagnosed with AMD. Studies found that Lutein and Zeaxanthin help prevent AMD and slow progression of the disease by preventing blue light from reaching the underlying structures of the retina, thereby reducing the risk of light-induced oxidative damage that could lead to AMD.

Why DO I Have Blurred and Cloudy Vision?

A cataract is a condition in which the clear lens of the eyes becomes cloudy, preventing sufficient light rays from entering the eyes and impairing vision. Age is the most common reason for developing cataracts. The development of cataract is also associated with a positive family history (if a family or relative has cataract before), an unhealthy lifestyle (such as smoking and heavy alcohol intake) and prolonged exposure to sunlight or radiation. Cataracts can cause eyes to be easily irritated, and can lead to decrease in visual acuity, with blurry and double vision.

DHA For Brain Development

During the last trimester of pregnancy and first two years of life, the brain undergoes rapid growth. At this stage, the brain requires sufficient nutrients especially DHA for the development of sensory, perceptual, cognitive, and motor skills. Fetuses and infants receive DHA from their mothers through the placenta and breast milk. Mothers should ensure sufficient DHA level through DHA-rich fishes that are free from heavy metals and pollutants, and high DHA supplements. Infant fed with formula milk should ingest milk that has DHA oil added to it to aid brain development.

B Vitamins Preserve Brain Health

Vitamin B6, B12 and folic acid - are known to reduce the level of homocysteine in the blood. Elevated levels of Homocysteine are associated with an increased risk of stroke, cognitive impairment and Alzheimer's disease. A study of a group of elderly patients with mild cognitive impairment found that after two years of intervention with high doses of B6, B12 and folic acid there was significantly less brain shrinkage compared to a subset that was given placebo treatment.

Practice Good Eating Habit

According to the American Dental Association, consuming a balanced and nutritious diet is an essential aspect of caring for your teeth. Foods that are rich in Calcium and Protein such as dairy products, lean meats, soy products and nuts play an important role in protecting and rebuilding your tooth enamel. It is also important to avoid excessive intake of candy, soft drinks and cookies which can lead to tooth decay due to their high sugar content.

Keep Your Toothbrush Clean

Keeping your toothbrush clean is vital for your oral health. Always rinse your toothbrush with water after using it. Store your toothbrush in an upright position and allow it to air-dry until the next use. Do not routinely cover toothbrushes or store them in closed containers, as it  encourages the growth of bacteria. It is also important to replace your toothbrush approximately every three to four months, or sooner if the bristles are frayed.  You may also opt for toothbrushes with anti-bacterial bristles to prevent bacteria growth on the brushhead.

Does Regular Trimming Promote Hair Growth?

Having a haircut has no effect on the rate of hair growth. Whether you get a hair trim or not, hair grows at the rate of one inch per month. The only proven factors that affect the rate of hair growth are genetics, hormones, and diet. However, it is important to note that the chopping of the split ends (which impede healthy hair growth) may promote better hair growth. Still the best way to promote healthy hair growth is to reduce the likelihood of split ends by avoiding over-styling.

The Importance Of SLS-Free Shampoo!

Check your shampoo labels and look for Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS) – a common foaming agent that present in 90% of commercially available shampoos. SLS is able to permeate the skin effectively and concentrate in some organs such as eyes, brain and heart. SLS washes away the hair's moisture and may lead to the premature shedding of hair, clogging hair follicles and hair loss. Therefore, it is important to avoid products containing SLS. Instead seek natural alternatives! AFC Shokaigan Shampoo do not contain SLS but incorporates a natural blend of 10 amino acids to gently but deeply cleanse, unclog hair follicles and regulate scalp pH levels.
