Feed your eyes.

In various studies and clinical trials, antioxidant vitamins such as vitamins A, C and E can help maintain healthy cells and tissues in the eyes. These vitamins are found in fruits and vegetables such as oranges, tomatoes, kale and spinach. Two key protective antioxidants are lutein and zeaxanthin, which also help to protect against macular degeneration and protect eyes from free radical damage. Omega 3 fatty acids are essential for nerve conduction in the retina. For healthy eyes, eat a good and balanced diet with lots of fresh fruits and vegetables, with oily fish like salmon, sardine or mackerel.

Have Blurred and Cloudy Vision? Why?

A cataract is a condition in which the clear lens of the eyes becomes cloudy, preventing sufficient light rays from entering the eyes and impairing vision. Age is the most common reason for developing cataracts. Development of cataract is also associated with family history (if family or relative has cataract before), unhealthy lifestyle (such as smoking and heavy alcohol intake) and prolonged exposure to sunlight or radiation. Cataracts can cause eyes to be irritable to glare easily, lead to decrease in visual acuity and cause vision to be blurred and cloudy, or even result in double vision.

Brisk walking boosts brain health

Do you know brisk walking stimulates blood circulation, and provides sufficient oxygen supply to the brain? This will improve your brain functions and memory performance. Researchers found that brisk walking for 30 to 40 minutes a day, three times a week can maintain healthy structures and functions of the brain, and protect the brain against cognitive decline in later life.

Help your brain by staying hydrated

Every cell in your body needs water to thrive, and your brain cells are no exception; in fact, about three-quarters of your brain is water. An Ohio University study found that people whose bodies were well hydrated scored significantly better on tests of brainpower, compared with those who weren’t drinking enough.

Keep your toothbrush clean

Keeping your toothbrush clean is vital to your oral health. Always rinse your toothbrush with water after brushing. Store your toothbrush in an upright position, if possible, and allow it to air-dry until using it again. Don't routinely cover toothbrushes or store them in closed containers, which can encourage the growth of bacteria. It is also important to replace your toothbrush approximately every three to four months, or sooner if the bristles are frayed.  You may also opt for toothbrush with anti-bacterial bristles to prevent bacteria growth on brushhead.

Drink green tea for healthy teeth and gums

Green tea contains phytochemicals called Catechins that can fight inflammation and control bacterial infections. A Japanese study found that people who drink green tea regularly have less occurrence of periodontal disease, as compared to infrequent tea drinkers.

Healthy diet for healthy hair.

Nuts supply zinc that promotes stronger hair and stimulate healthy hair growth. Don’t forget the greens, they are loaded with Vitamin A to relieve itching or dryness of scalp and Vitamin C which may retard hair loss. Whole grains supply the silicon which prevents brittle hairs. Vitamin Bs from meat and mushrooms help delay the onset of gray hair. Keep your diet low in unhealthy fats, as excess fats consumption leads to oily hair.  Beauty starts within, begins with a healthy natural diet for your nutrients need!

Dye your hair, harm your health.

Hair dying contains chemicals that capable of removing or covering natural pigments found inside the hair shaft. Use of these chemicals can result in many side effects, including skin irritation, hair breakage and skin discolouration. Many studies have consistently found that hair colorists have an increased risk of non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma, multiple myeloma and leukemia. You should avoid and reduce the frequency of hair dying to reduce your risk from getting cancer.

Hormone pills and breast cancer?

Research findings from the California Teachers Study point the decline in breast cancer to the reduced use of Hormone Therapy (HT) at peri-menopausal stage. Prolonged use of HT may be a link to the increased risk of breast cancer, stroke, ovarian cancer, and endometrial cancer. As your body undergoes the transition, try to rely on natural plant-based alternatives instead. Try Maca (Lepidium peruvianum), clinically proven to support hormonal imbalances, to improve mood and regulates stress. Many women find this a boon to improving menopausal symptoms.

Cervical cancer leads to 100 death cases per year in Singapore!

There are 200 diagnosed cases yearly. Infection with human papillomavirus (HPV), early sexual contact, multiple sexual partners, smoking, weakened immune system and taking oral contraceptives expose females to higher risk. You may have no signs or symptoms of cervical cancer until it has progressed to an advanced stage. If you are sexually active, do a pap smear every three years for early detection. Load up your body with raspberries as the ellagic acid in these berries is clinically proven to possibly kill off HPV and inhibit cancer growth.

Probiotics for immunity.

An alternative medicine recognized by National Institute of Health in US, probiotics are commonly used to prevent and treat certain illnesses and support general wellness. Antibiotics kill gut-friendly bacteria as well as the unfriendly bacteria and probiotics are widely used after antibiotics to offset its side effects. A research published in the Pediatric Infectious Disease Journal at April 2010 shows that probiotics reduce the severity of diarrhea and enhance immunity. It also increases bioavailabity of B vitamins, calcium, iron, zinc, copper, and others.

Healthy travelling!

Nothing spoils the excitement of discovering a foreign place like falling sick. The most common conditions are diarrhea, nausea, abdominal cramps and bloating. It pays to take extra precautions, particularly if you are travelling to developing countries: always stick to bottled water, avoid eating raw or undercooked food. Wash your hands with soap, and use a hand sanitizer when washing facilities are unavailable.

Miso- a super healthy soup!

Miso soup helps your body to get rid of harmful radioactive waste. A compound known as Dipicolinic acid attaches to heavy metals and radioactive strontium and carries them out of the body. During the 1945 atomic bombing of Nagasaki in Japan, clinic workers ate miso soup regularly, which may have helped them to avoid severe symptoms of radiation.  Cooking tips: Never boil miso as boiling process will destroy its nutrients. Add miso paste to your soup after it has been removed from direct heat.

Think twice before drinking carbonated drink

Do you know? Phosphoric acid and caffeine found in carbonated drink may interfere calcium absorption in the body. Researchers found that women who regularly drink carbonated drinks three or more cups a day have almost 4% lower bone mineral density in the hip. Opt for healthy and nutritious drinks like fruit juice, soy milk, green tea, honey drink etc.

Liver-Friendly Diet

Firstly, watch your alcohol intake. Processing alcohol stresses your liver significantly. Keeping your liver from toxic chemicals relaxes it and maintains its optimal function. And also, keep yourself away from greasy fatty foods. Saturated fats are harder to process, such as sausages, bacon, hot dogs, and high fat dairy products. Limit the intake of processed food like white rice, biscuits, cakes, pastries, donuts and candy. Fresh fruits and vegetables are good source of enzymes, fibers, vitamins, phyto-nutrients, that help optimize liver functions.

Watch the caffeine

A moderate caffeine intake boosts metabolism and elevates moods. Long term effects of caffeine however, can cause heart palpitations, hypertension and insomnia. It is best to keep your daily caffeine intake to less than 400mg. One serving of espresso (1 oz.) has 40mg of caffeine. A cup of brewed coffee (8 oz.) contains up to 133mg of caffeine. Decaf coffee has less than 5mg of caffeine. Energy drinks and soft drinks are high in caffeine too - Red Bull (12 oz) has about 80mg of caffeine while a diet Pepsi has 36mg!

Water for Beauty.

70% of our body is made up of water. Water is necessary for metabolic activities and regulating the moisture content in skin. With aging, the skin’s water binding ability is significantly reduced. For hydration from within, try Hyaluronic Acid, a skin nutrient that locks up to 6,000 times its weight to retain moisture, smoothen wrinkles, and stimulate repair of damaged skin.

Minimize sunlight exposure.

Overexposure to harmful UV rays can cause up to 20% more collagen loss in skin. Always ensure you have sun protection and stay out of the sun from 10am to 4pm, when the rays are the most intense. According to Environmental Working Group in UK, there are currently no sunscreens that meet their safety levels. Common sunscreen contains Vitamin A (retinol/ retinyl palmitate) which may increase the risk of cancer or disrupt hormonal balance. Choose sunscreen without these harmful chemicals. For added protection, wear a hat and cover up.

Walk your way health!

No time for gym? According to World Health Organization, physical activity does not necessarily means running a marathon or playing competitive sports. It can be walking children to school or taking a brisk stroll in the park. Studies show that increasing daily walking steps is associated with a decline in the body fats, reduced waist girth and improved resting heart rate. Keep your daily steps no fewer than 7,500, as it helps avoid tummy fat accumulation. Use stairs but not elevator, alight two bus stops early, it all adds up to the steps taken per day.

Walk the mall!

Nothing is more exciting than doing your exercise and shopping at the same time. A research on shopping pattern shows that shoppers spent up to 86 minutes in shopping mall per visit. An 86 minutes of brisk walking can use up 500kcal! That is ¼ of the daily calorie intake of a normal weight adult! Incorporate brisk walking during your shopping spree for the extra calories burnt. A weekly shopping trip can help you lose 1kg in 4 months time, simple by walking faster in the mall!
