Preserve your eye health

Eye exercise.

A four-step eye exercise can relieve tired eyes after long hours of working in front of the computer screen. Do it daily, particularly in between breaks from the computer. Step 1: Close your eyes tightly for 3- 5 seconds and open them for 3-5 seconds. Repeat 7-8 times. Step 2: Close your eyes again and massage in circular movements for 1-2 minutes. Step 3: Press three fingers against upper eyelids, hold for 1-2 seconds then release. Repeat 5 times. Step 4: Roll your eyes clockwise, then counter-clockwise, and then blink once. Repeat 5 times.

Eating for two during pregnancy?

Mothers need additional calories during pregnancy for the natural weight gain. However, the extra calorie needs is not as high as most mothers think. Pregnant women only need to add about 100kcal for the first trimester, add another 200kcal for the second and third trimester. A cup of soy milk supplies your excess calorie needs for the first trimester. While 1 medium banana, 1 apple, 1 cup of soy milk with 1 piece of digestive biscuit in addition to your daily diet provides you nutrients for the excess needs during second and third trimester.

Bigger may not be better during pregnancy.

Weight gain during pregnancy varies among women. If you are underweight (BMI <18.5), you should gain 12.5-18kg. If your weight is normal (BMI 18.5-25), the recommended weight gain is 11.5-16kg. For overweight mother (BMI 25.1-29.9), weight gain should between 7-11.5kg. For those who are obese, weight gain is should be <7kg. Avoid sudden and excess weight gain as these are associated with adverse health effects: pregnancy induced hypertension, gestational diabetes, large baby who may become obese, and complications during delivery.

Less salt, better health!

The average intake of salt of an average adult in Singapore is 9g per day, which is more than the recommended 5g per day. Excessive sodium intake can lead to hypertension and aggravate health problems such as kidney disease, congestive heart failure and premenstrual syndrome. Therefore, it is important to choose and prepare food with less salt and sauces which are the main source of sodium in our diet. 

Watch the caffeine

A moderate caffeine intake boosts metabolism and elevates moods. Long term effects of caffeine however, can cause heart palpitations, hypertension and insomnia. It is best to keep your daily caffeine intake to less than 400mg. One serving of espresso (1 oz.) has 40mg of caffeine. A cup of brewed coffee (8 oz.) contains up to 133mg of caffeine. Decaf coffee has less than 5mg of caffeine. Energy drinks and soft drinks are high in caffeine too - Red Bull (12 oz) has about 80mg of caffeine while a diet Pepsi has 36mg!

For example, stretching your waist muscles can help prevent back injury. Stand with a half squat with feet shoulder-width apart, knees bent and hands on hips. Bend slowly to the left then back to the center. Then bend to the right. You should feel the tension at your waist muscles. Keep it parallel without leaning forwards or backwards. It takes merely 5 minutes for 10 repetitions!
